Horse Camping

The campground has several types of accommodations. See Camping Rates page for types and prices. Reservations are recommended for both regular camping and for horse camping - See Reservations Request page to book your stay with us. This facility has all those services you don't usually find at a basic horse camp. Private home style bathrooms, electric and water hook ups for your trailer, and propane service.

Horse Facilities

There are fifteen large (16' x 16') horse stalls in the campground for the overnight securing of your horse. Reservations are recommended. Horses must not be tied directly to trees, water faucets, or RV electric service. There are hitching posts located near the main building for visits to the office & store. For daytime use of picket lines with tree savers, electric fences, or portable corrals, please check with manager when you check in.

Horse Trails

There are several different trail systems in the area. You can ride from your campsite directly into the Black Hills National Forest and onto the various trails in the area. There are brochures in the information racks at the campground office about the Centennial Trail, George S Mickelson Trail, Custer State Park's trails, and the National Forest Service's trail system. There are also brochures on other attractions and activities in the area for those days when sightseeing is planned.

Brand Inspection

Please bring a current health certificate, current coggins test, and proof of ownership for all horses and/or mules. As we are located in the West South Dakota ownership inspection area, a Livestock Ownership Inspection for all out of state animals is required before you leave the Black Hills. This requirement applies whether or not the horse or mule is branded. The brand inspector will come to our location upon request, with a 24-hour notice. Inspection rates are nominal per animal (plus mileage) or you can obtain a lifelong permit that is good until change of ownership. An Annual Horse/Mule Transportation Permit is required for Eastern South Dakota animals and is available from your local county agents only. For further information, please call the SD Stockgrowers Association in Rapid City. Telephone: (605) 343-2660

Equine Law

South Dakota Codified Law 42-11-2. Persons exempt from liability. No equine activity, sponsor, equine professional, doctor of veterinary medicine, or any other person, is liable for an injury to or the death of a participant resulting from the inherent risks of equine activities.
